Fall Hike

Fall Hike

Thursday, September 17 | 6:00 PM
šŸ“ 7040 NE 47th Ave, Portland, OR 97218

Lace up your boots and kick off fall with a family-friendly evening hike through one of Portland's hidden natural gems! Whitaker Ponds Nature Park is a beautiful urban wildlife refuge tucked away in Northeast Portland — home to two ponds, native wetlands, and abundant wildlife. It's the perfect setting for curious Scouts and their families to explore the natural world together.

What to Expect

This is a relaxed, family-paced hike through paved and natural surface trails. The park is a designated wildlife refuge, so keep eyes peeled for great blue herons, ducks, turtles, and other urban wildlife along the way. It's a great opportunity to earn outdoor and nature-themed achievements while enjoying the fresh air of the season.

The 6 Scout Essentials

Every Scout should arrive prepared! Make sure each child has these 6 essentials packed and ready:

  • First Aid Kit — basic supplies for minor cuts and scrapes
  • Water — bring plenty to stay hydrated on the trail
  • Snacks — a little fuel goes a long way
  • Sun Protection — sunscreen and/or a hat
  • Flashlight or Headlamp — evenings get dark early in September, so this is a must!
  • Whistle — an important safety tool every Scout should carry

What to Wear & Bring

  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are a good idea for evening hikes!)
  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking boots
  • A small backpack to carry your essentials
  • Rain jacket just in case — this is Portland, after all šŸŒ§ļø

The trailhead entrance is located at 7040 NE 47th Ave, Portland, OR 97218. Street parking is available along NE 47th Ave. Look for your Pack 972 family crew near the main entrance at 6:00 PM!
